As the holidays are approaching, we’re sure most of you will be traveling to visit with your families. Whether it’s one hour or four hours or even more, being in the car for a long period of time can really affect your back. There are a few things that can help make the trip more enjoyable…

  1. Warm Up! – before you hop in the car, try stretching or going on a short walk. When you’re in the car bring along a heat wrap or if your car has heated seats, set it at a low temperature.
  2. Get Comfortable! – Empty out your pockets and adjust your seat and mirrors. Do your best to sit up straight, even the slightest slouch can cause some major pain. You can even try adding extra support, like a lumbar pillow (If you’re in a pinch, try a rolled-up jacket or scarf!).
  3. Take Breaks! –  If you’re on a longer trip, scheduling stops to be able to move around can help prevent your back from tightening. It’s recommended to take a break every 60 minutes to stretch and walk around. This will loosen your muscles and encourage better blood circulation. (Try adjusting your seat every 15-20 minutes, even the smallest adjustment can give you relief!)
  4. Cool Down! – If you regularly suffer from back pain, a cold pack could be the best travel buddy! Using a cold pack can reduce the inflammation and numb some of your soreness. (Try bringing a cooler to keep reusable ice packs or stop by the pharmacy to grab some instant ice packs just to have them on hand in case you begin to experience pain!)
  5. Get an Adjustment! – Why suffer from back pain if you don’t have to? We have people schedule to come in right before and right after they travel. Whether it’s a flight or a long drive, sitting in the same position for a long period of time can leave you with discomfort in your neck and back and we can help prevent that! Call us today to book your pre-travel adjustment!
